Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is a comprehensive and state key university, directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China.The university is reshaped on May 26, 2000, merging the former HUST, the former Tongji Medical University and the former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute. HUST is among the universities first approved under “Project 211” and “Project 985”.Since 2016, HUST has been selected as the“Double First-Class University”by the Ministry of Education of China.
Huazhong University of Science and Technology Tongji Medical College (HUST TMC) is one of the first 10 universities jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. TMC is among the first universities and colleges that offer eight-year curriculum on clinical medicine, and that attend Physician Education and Training Program of Excellence. As the Sino-German Medical Education Cooperative Trial Zone, TMC is one of the only two institutions with state-level experimental demonstration centers for preclinical medicine, clinical medicine, and preventive medicine.
Consisting of School of Basic Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine and Health Management, School of Nursing, Department of Forensic Medicine, Family Planning Research Institute,and 9 clinical schools, TMC offers a full range of courses and research opportunities for 13 undergraduate programs, 75 accredited master programs, 68 accredited doctoral programs, and 6 post-doctoral workstations.Among them, the School of Basic Medicine and the School of Public Health has been approved into the“Double First-Class Subject”since 2016. TMC also has 9 state key disciplines, 5 state key developing disciplines, 60 state clinical key departments, 9 accredited first-class disciplines with doctoral degree. In the third round discipline evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education, Public Health and Preventive Medicine are ranked number one; 2 of the first-class disciplines are in top 3 list, with 3 first-class disciplines in top 5 and 5 first-class disciplines in top 10. Also, 9 disciplines come to top 1% in ESI global discipline ranking list, namely, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biology and Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Behavioral Science, Immunology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Social Science, Agricultural Science, and Environmental Science and Ecology. It also has 9 state key disciplines, 5 state key developing disciplines, 60 state clinical key departments, 9 accredited first-class disciplines with doctoral degree. TMC focuses on “Student-oriented Education”, establishing and implementing a dynamic system for medical innovation and personnel training. The college now has an enrollment of about 9000 students, including more tha 4000 undergraduate students, 3800 graduate students, and 790 international students, with the help of 3 national teaching teams, 4 national featured disciplines, 3 national experimental teaching demontration centers, 15 National Elaborate Courses, 15 National Elaborate Resource-Sharing Courses, 7 National Bilingual Teaching Demonstration Courses, 3 National Elaborate Web-Delivery Courses. Under the heading of the college, 114 state-level textbooks of different varieties are implemented, as faculty members have received 9 state-level awards of teaching achievements. For 110 years since the college was founded, TMC has delivered over 80,000 medical professionals and researchers to the industry and society and gained long-standing reputation for its excellence and contribution. The prominent alumni of TMC are leaders in modern medicine, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering Qiu Fazu, Wu Mengchao, Wu Min, Lu Daopei, HouYunde, Zhang Disheng, Zhou Honghao, Hu Shengshou, Yang Baofeng and Chen Xiaoping, as well as the academician of National Academy of Medicine, Frank B. Hu.
As a leading medical research institution, moreover, TMC shares and applies vision and creativity to global advanced studies of modern medicine, and also endeavors in promoting the public health in China, so that implement and establish a key scientific innovation stage involving various disciplinary fields, namely, Basic Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Clinical Medicine, etc. Besides, TMC has 1 state key research station, 2 key laboratories co-sponsored by the province and ministry, 12 ministerial key laboratories, and 8 provincial key laboratories. For a decade, the college has received scientific research funds granted of over 1.65 billion RMB, and more than 130 approved projects under National 863 Plan, National Science-Technology Support Plan, National Science and Technology Major Project, and National Key R&D Plan of the Thirteenth Five Year. TMC is one of medical schools that attained the most research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation. Since the year of 2000, the college has taken the charge of 6 projects of National “973 Plan”, and received 19 national awards including Natural Science Award, Science and Technology Advancement Award, and Technological Invention Award. TMC also gained 42 awards from Chinese Medical Association and 283 Awards of Science and Technology of Hubei Province.
TMC has 9 affiliated hospitals. Among them, Wuhan Union Hospital and Tongji Hospital are large modern general hospitals, conducting medical treatment, teaching, research, and also training. Both are leading hospitals nationwide and they are medical centers of Central China. On the other hand, Liyuan Hospital full takes advantage from its strength in the study in prevention and treatment of age-related diseases and established the Hubei Research Institute of Gerontology, attaining remarkable achievements medical research. Moreover, in the year of 2016, established and managed jointly with the government, 6 other hospitals with respectful reputation become affiliated to TMC, namely, Hubei Cancer Hospital, Wuhan Integrated TCM & Western Medicine Hospital, Wuhan Central Hospital, Wuhan Pu-Ai Hospital, Wuhan Women and Children Medical Care Center, and Wuhan Mental Health Center. Integrating the medical resources, affiliated hospitals are able to work together and make contributions to the society as well as serve to the "Healthy China" Strategy.
Since TMC was founded as a German medical school by Dr. Erich Paulun in Shanghai, the college maintains strong alliances with German universities and institutes. Also, the college assumes the relationship with Germany as a pivot to support the communication with other countries and develop the partnership worldwide. Therefore, TMC has built long-term cooperative relationship with more than 40 universities, institutes, hospitals, and organizations worldwide, and signed more than 40 interscholastic protocols. Moreover, exchange programs and joint training and research plans have been established with many world-class universities, considerably enhancing the global impact of the college.
