German Chancellor Merkel Visited HUST

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is on an official visit to China from Sept 6 to 7. Merkel visited Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province and a key hub for the Yangtze River Economic Belt's development. She specially chose Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) as an important stop in Wuhan. The highlights of her visit to HUST are speech delivered in the morning and a trip to Tongji Hospital(the Optical Valley Branch, also named Sino-German Friendship Hospital) Affiliated to Tongji Medical College of HUST in the afternoon.

Angela Merkel speaks in front of students of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Sept 7, 2019). Merkel said Germany is glad to have benefited from China's further opening-up policy, and it is willing to continue expanding investment in China.

Chancellor Merkel was accompanied by Party Secretary of HUST,Prof. SHAO Xinyu, and Presdient of HUST, Prof. LI Yuanyuan. They firstly visited the exhibition wall displaying HUST's collaboration with Germany. Prof. SHAO explained to her that extensive cooperation with intimate partners like University of Heidelberg, Max Planck Institute, Bosch Academia Sinica etc.have been carried out for years and collaboration with Germany is one of the tradition and advantages of HUST. H.E.Steffen Seibert, State Secretary of the German Chancellery; H.E. Dr. Clemens von Goetze, German Ambassador to China; H.E.WU Ken, Chinese Ambassador to Germany; and other leaders accompanied her on the vist.

Presdient LI Yuanyuan addressed a welcoming speech on behalf of HUST. He said that today's HUST is striving to build a world-class university and its international development is accelerating. HUST is willing to deepen cooperation and strengthen friendship with higher education and researching Institutions in German, so as to inject new connotation into Sino-German Strategic Partnership and contribute to building a community of shared future for mankind. Vice President Prof. CHEN Jianguo, the Dean and Party Secretary of Tongji Medical College, presided over the speech.

In her speech, Chancellor Merkel said, HUST is a place where talents coming forth in multitudes, including Deng Julongthe and LIU Sifeng, the original theorists of Grey System, Mr. ZHANG Xiao-long, the founder of Wechat App, Ms. LI Na and LI Ting, the sports stars. All these famous alumni made a significant contribution to the society, which makes HUST a world-renowned university. China assumes major global responsibility and we must strengthen international cooperation in order to stay successful, said Merkel. Clean environment and interesting work make the young generation settle down to create a better life. China and Germany shared the wish. "So we need multilateralism more than ever. We should not do it alone but work together."

After the speech, Merkel answered questions from students on topics as the Internet, artificial intelligence, industrial manufacturing and environmental protection. For the current World Robot Competition, Merkel suggested that HUST could strengthen exchanges with Munich university and Berlin University of Technology in related subjects.

In the afternoon, Chancellor Merkel visited Tongji Hospital(the Optical Valley Branch, also named Sino-German Friendship Hospital) Affiliated to Tongji Medical College of HUST.

In the clinic lobby, Merkel shook hands with the front-line medical staff to offer her condolences.She took a group photo with staff representatives. Merkel visited the Cultural Street of the Hospital,and asked about the overall medical situation in China and the life of German inernship students here. The staff and student representatives talked with German Chancellor with a light heart. "I was very impressed by Tongji Hospital's capability in serving the patients. It was terrific!" She said that China's medical science and education have been developing so rapidly and she expected the universities and medical institutions of the two countries should further strengthen their cooperation. She spoke highly of China's medical system and policies and gave full recognition to Tongji Hospital's role as a benchmark for Sino-German exchanges.
