From Nov.21 to 25, 2018, as the representatives of young teachers from School of Basic Medicine, associate professor Pei Lei and Tang Ke visited the university of Birmingham (UOB) with a delegation of Tongji Medical College. During the visit, they participated inPERCAT Research Gala(Postdoctoral/Early Researcher Career Development & Training), which is an annualacademic activities organized by the UOB. They also held talks with Prof. Jon Frampton, the vice President of the university, and also with heads of relevant colleges of UOB. In additon, they visited the institute of translational medicine, clinical research center, biomedical research center. Visiting delegations from Tongji Medical College also included representatives of young teachers from the school of pharmacy, the school of public health, the Union hospital, the Tongji hospital and the school of nursing.

UOB, was founded in 1900, is one of the important members of the Russell group universities. It is the first “red brick” university and is recognized to be one of the UK's top 10 outstanding research universities. UOB has high quality in the field of research and has received highest reputation both at home and abroad. Notably, two British prime ministers, and eight Nobel Prize winner were coming from UOB. At present, the university of Birmingham has 8 colleges, among which the school of medicine and dentistry has established close cooperation with our Tongji Medical College.

During the visit, Pei Lei and Tang Ke, representating the school of basic medicine reported the progress and research results related to neuroscience and oncology to the teachers and students from school of medicine of UOB. After the meeting, they had group discussions and exchanges with professors of relevant majors, and had in-depth communication on the research fields and directions of possible cooperation in the future.

In addition, UOB has arranged young teachers from Tongji visited institute of translational medicine research center. Researchers enthusiastically introduced the basic situation of the institute of medicine, operational mechanism and management system to every visitors. They told the visitors they had carried out cooperative research projects with both UOB affiliated Hospitals and school of medicine and made a lot of successful achievements. All the teachers who visited the institute of translational medicine were deeply impressed by its rational planning, international configuration of laboratories, humanized design concepts and beautiful working environment.

This visit is on the basis of the UOB’s visit to Tongji in June this year. Based on the areas of cooperation of interest to both sides, the two sides have conducted more in-depth cooperation and exchanges in the fields of translational medicine and teaching cooperation. The vice President of UOB Jon Frampton said that they will continue to work hard to promote the existing projects, expand cooperation between other advantageous disciplines and basic medicine of Tongji medical college, and deepen the strategic partnership between Tongji Medical College and UOB.
