The Report Meeting of 2017 Summer Camps of TJMC

On September 15, the Report Meeting of 2017 Summer Camps of Tongji Medical College organized by the Medical Office of the International Exchange Center was held at Tongji Medical College, HUST. More than 20 teachers and students who participated in the Summer Camps gathered together to share their experience.

Under the active assistance of TJMC’s alumni, Prof. Zheng Tongzhang and Liu Simin, the School of International Education of HUST has organized a Summer Camp to Brown University in USA for 25 days, attended by 28 students from the School of Public Health, the School of Basic Medicine, and the School of Pharmacy. Mr. XIA Pengfei, a undergraduate from grade 2014 of the School of Public Health, introduced the main content and feelings of this summer camp. Three-weeks full English teaching, let the campers feel a completely different American teaching ways and concepts. The original English literature and teaching materials have greatly benefited the students, and everyone's learning motivation has been greatly aroused. The students' positive attitude, spirit of exploration and English proficiency also impressed the professors of Brown University, who believed that "Learning Medicine in Tongji" is not a false story.

The Summer Camp to the University of Birmingham, UK, is the results under the framework of bilateral agreement between HUST and Birmingham during the 110 Anniversary of Tongji Medical College in May, which was implemented by the School of Basic Medicine. Campers were mainly from the medical science experimental classes and partly from the clinical medicine majors. Prof. Yan Hanjiao led the team. Mr. YAN Miao presented their story on behalf the campers.This Summer Camp lasted 3 weeks with more than 90 campers from UK, China, Brazil and other 8 countries.  Innovative courses and lectures, covering health care supplying chains in clinical environment, experimental design, stem cell research, bio-information, new gene sequencing and many other areas were taught by professors of Birmingham. Various teaching methods were adopted, especially doctor-patient situational dialogues involving professional actors, autonomous learning based on literature retrieval and group discussion. Besides, campers were organized one-day tour to Oxford, Cambridge and other famous universities, to observe the history, culture, architecture of UK with their keen eyes.

The School of Pharmacy organized a summer camp to the National University of Singapore. Campers representative, Mr. ZHU Yunpeng, a sophomore reported their story. The main content of the summer camp was to listen to the undergraduate courses in the Department of Pharmacy of NUS who gives priority to cultivating clinical pharmacists, focusing on the vocational skills, such as the clinical curative effects of drugs and the ability to communicate with patients, with relatively few theoretic courses. NUS interdisciplinary courses and practical training way deeply impressed him, besides, the clean and neat laboratory, the complex yet orderly equipment all amazed the young Chinese students.

 

The School of Pharmacy also organized a summer camp to Manchester University in the UK, attended by 5 students, led by Prof. MA Xiang and FANG Jinbo. This is the only camp without professional knowledge learning, but focusing on the camper’s capacity-building and character-fostering, only first-year undergraduates enrolled. The campers listened lectures on "New Products Marketing" and then implemented their plans to pioneer the market of a newly-designed product. Students of different professional backgrounds cooperated, going to the streets to interview people, knowing the needs of local people, and designed the most innovative products and propose marketing solutions.The Summer Camp greatly cultivated the campers’ team spirit and intercultural communication skills.

Seven students from the School of Medicine and Health attended the Summer Camp with the theme “Global Health” for 28 days, organized by St. Louis University in U.S.A.. American professors taught them 2 courses named Global Health Effects and Global Health Practice, among which impressed them most was Prof. Curley’s lecture demonstrating the significance of health and social work through his own experience in Africa. Apart from the in-doors study, autonomous learning, public service advertisement, and the peer communication with the campers from University of Suzhou all made students feel contented and rewarding.

Finally, Miss QU Conghui introduced the Summer Camp in Kanazawa Medical University in Japan on behalf of the 3 students from the School of Nursing. Students visited Affiliated Hospital and Elderly Care Center, watching the nursing process for those severe diseased patients in bed, doing sports together with the elderly,  comprehending the current situation of Japanese nursing and experience the humanistic care of Japanese nursers. In a well-trained and elegant manner, Miss QU well reflected her understanding of Japanese culture. Obviously, the etiquette and cultivation of Japanese everywhere profoundly influenced the students during this trip.

In the Report Meeting, each delegate spoke out freely, with topics including their novel feeling of foreign culture, the comparison of Chinese and western medical education, and the frontier medical researching. Every speaker faced some enthusiastic questions after introduction, and mostly concerned about the target group, admission conditions and school funding. At last, Mr. CHEN Gong from the International Exchange Center, summed up the meeting. He believed that every visit was an important opportunity for internationalization of TJMC, and every student was the ambassador of TJMC; the Summer Camps should not only emphasize "quantity", but also "quality".The International Exchange Center will strive for more intercollegiate frameworks and more channels of communication, with the purpose to enable more teachers and students to go out and benefit from the internationalization of "Double First-class Building" of HUST.

This year, the Departments and Schools of TJMC organized eight summer camps, ranging from one week to one month, enrolled 88 students and 8 teachers. In order to further promote “the three 10% goal of Internationalization” proposed by school "13th 5-year Plan", related administration sectors all increased financial budget and issued detailed rules for supporting the mobility, each department and schools also  enhanced courses reform and project management. It’s believed that the international exchanges of TJMC will surely step onto a new stage.
