School of Basic Medicine hosted a series of lectures on Cardiovascular Systems by International Experts in 2020

In order to enhance international exchange and cooperation, and to improve teaching levels, the School of Basic Medicine organized a series of lectures on cardiovascular system by international experts from November 24 to December 23, 2020. The panel of experts was invited by Prof. Youming Lu, Dean of School of Basic Medicine. The lectures were organized and hosted by Prof, Jiong Hu, Department of Histology and Embryology, and Prof. Dan Liu, Department of Medical Genetics. Due to the pandemic, the lectures were given in online mode.

Prof. Ingrid Fleming, member of German academy, Director of Institute for Vascular Signalling at Goether University Germany, and Prof. Andreas Papapetropoulos, the Dean of Pharmacy School of The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Greece, jointly completed a 36-class theoretical course on “Abnormality in Receptor and Ion Channel Function Associated with Disease” for the first year Doctoral students 2020.

Prof. Ingrid Fleming explained the vascular system in three chapters: 1. vascular hemodynamics, 2. vascular signal transduction, 3. vascular dysfunction and regulation. Prof. Andreas Papapetropoulos gave the lecture in the role of gas molecules in the cardiovascular system, the role and mechanism of the second messenger cGMP in the cardiovascular system, and the role of angiogenesis in physiology and pathology.

Through this series of lectures, the 2020 PhD students in the School of Basic Medicine have gained a preliminary but relatively comprehensive understanding of the vascular system from the basic vascular unit circulatory system, not only the historical discovery of the "old" nitric oxide (NO) and the awarding of the eNOS Nobel Prize but also the latest cutting-edge research in the vascular field.

As an attempt at a new type of teaching content and approach, we also found some space for improvement during the teaching and Q&A stage. Such as, due to the different levels in English listening and speaking, the students do not receive all the information equally. Also, since the students were from different departments, some students were unfamiliar with the lecture contents. In the future, we will actively promote the participation of international experts in the lectures of our undergraduate and graduate students. We will adopt relatively systematic lectures on specific topics, and inform students of the lecture content in advance, and will provide students with certain reading materials, so that they can do their homework to improve the understanding of the content of the lecture.
