From October31stto November 28th2021, 40 undergraduates from the School of Nursing participated virtually in the Online Summer Program on Community Nursing in Singapore initiated by the Alice Lee Centrefor Nursing Studies(ALCNS), National University of Singapore(NUS).
Four teachers from ALCNS gave five English lectures on the topics of “Nursing Education for Community Nursing Practice in the 21st Century”, “Transitional Care: Promoting Self-Care in Patients with Heart Failure after Hospital Discharge”, “Health Promotion in the Community through Nurse Health Coaches”, “Community Nursing Practice in Cognitive Screening” and “Taking a Lead in Educating the Community on Healthy Ageing and Brain Health”.
The course was taught in the format of "Synchronous Lecture+ Post-Class Tutorial", combined with group discussion and scenario teaching to instruct more interactions between students with teachers.
In the Post-Class Tutorial session, students were broken into different Zoom meeting rooms to discuss typical cases provided by teachers. Their spoken English and independent study skills are greatly enhanced.
In the Final Presentation session, students worked in groups of five to review the literature, compare, analyze and present the functions, scope of practice and development direction of community nursing in China and Singapore using slides and videos in English.
This program provided students with an in-depth understanding of the cutting edge of community nursing education and practice in Singapore, and it also enabled them to have an intuitive recognition of the Singapore healthcare system and has broaden their international perspective. The students expressed that it was a very memorable and valuable experience to participate in online international program during Covid-19 pandemic and that they have learned a lot.

The School of Nursing, Tongji Medical College of HUST signed Memorandum of Agreement with ALCNS on September, 2021, reaching a consensus on faculty and student exchanges, with joint research collaborationand other cooperation aspects. This online program cooperation was funded by the International Exchange Office of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, which fully reflects the active expansion of new methods of international exchange in the post-pandemic era between the two institutions.
