On November 7th, the "HUST-UoB Academic Lecture Series on Nursing" was held online over Zoom. This virtual lecture was co-organized by Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and University of Birmingham (UoB). Prof. Anne Topping, the Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery at UoB, was invited alongside Dr. Chong Tian, who is the Lecturer of School of Nursing at Tongji Medical College (TJMC), and Director of Health Aging and Management at the Institute of Health Policy and Management of HUST to deliver speeches. The event was hosted by Dr. Xinxue Xi, Head Nurse of Tongji Hospital Affiliated to TJMC of HUST, attracting more than 120 viewers.

Prof. Anne Topping gave a presentation on “Participation, Involvement and Engagement of Patients and the Public in Research Design: A Rare Cancer Case Study”. She started by introducing the concept of Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) and four principles contained within. Next, she used a case study to examine the role of PPIE in the development of a proposed randomised controlled trial (RCT) involving patients with neuroendocrine tumours. Prof. Anne pointed out that experiential knowledge captured from patients could improve the quality and relevance of healthcare research.

Dr. Chong Tian delivered a presentation on “Full Cycle Nursing Research in the Context of Building a Healthy China: Taking Alzheimer's Disease as an Example”. She gave a brief introduction about the Healthy China Initiative and the background of China’s Healthcare System Reform along with the concept of Full Cycle Health Service. Dr. Tian further presented the AI-based screening tool for mild cognitive impairment designed by her research team and demonstrated some of the features of the AI-based home care system.

In the Q&A session, attendees discussed "Healthy City Construction in Nurses' Perspective", "Application of AI in Dementia Patient Care" and "Comparison of PPIE Research in China and the UK " with the two speakers.

This lecture focused on new dimensions of nursing research and provoked the participants to compare the similarities and differences of nursing research methods in China and the UK. At the same time, it further deepened cooperation and exchange between the nursing disciplines of the two universities. (Written by Jialin Fang)
