Focus on Medical Education and Promote Sino-German Cooperation ——The first Sino-German Medical Forum on Medical Education was successfully held in Tongji Medical College

On November 1, 2023, the Sino-German Medical Forum on Medical Education was successfully held in Tongji Medical College. The forum was hosted by Sino-German Consortium on Medical Research and Education and Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Experts from Heidelberg University, Dusseldorf University, Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Peking University, Sichuan University and other member units of the Sino-German Consortium on Medical Research gathered to discuss how to promote the high-quality development of medical education from the perspective of international exchange and innovation.

The forum officially kicked off under the auspices of Shu Xiaogang, Vice-Dean of TJMC, HUST. He welcomed the leaders and guests attending the meeting and said that the cooperation and communication between China and Germany have a long history, and during the course of cooperation, the two sides have maintained close contact in scientific research cooperation, academic exchanges and personnel training. This forum focuses on the new era, new ideas and new methods to promote the training of medical talents, share experience with colleagues at home and abroad, and help the reform and innovative development of medical education in China and Germany.

Chen Jianguo, Vice-President of HUST, gave a keynote speech on the topic of "Some Thoughts on the Current Situation and Future of Medical education". He pointed out that the current medical and health system has put forward four dimensions of "great health, group health, common health, and total health", and expects the universities contribute to improving the handling capacity of major new public health emergencies. He also stressed that medical education needs to cultivate innovative thinking, medical education should pay attention to stimulate students' thirst for knowledge and creativity, in this regard, more exchanges with German experts.

Professor Michael Kirschfink, on behalf of Heidelberg University, reviewing the cooperation between Heidelberg University and Tongji Medical College and the accomplishments through joint efforts and noting that this is the first time that it is a valuable opportunity to share knowledge about teaching with colleagues and partners from the universities of the Sino-German Union, and that the current research needs more and more multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Tang Qizhu, Vice-President of Wuhan University, pointing out that the alliance provides a institutionalized platform for Chinese and German universities to achieve mutually beneficial and mutual learning cooperation in the field of medical education. Through the alliance, we will carry out more extensive and in-depth cooperation with German universities, and strive to create a good situation of mutual learning, complementary advantages and win-win cooperation between Chinese and German universities.

Chen Xiaoping, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and honorary dean of TJMC, HUST, delivered a video speech to express his wishes and expectations for the success of the forum. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the German experts for their long-standing contributions to faculty development and medical education reform at Tongji Medical College. He hoping to share the new development, new models and new ideas of medical education practice through academic exchanges, and wished the conference a complete success.

Dr. Veronika Strittmatter-Haubold gave a lecture on "Life-long learning: A concept for professional competencies", which explores the concept of lifelong learning and the importance of lifelong learning for universities. She stressed the importance of lifelong learning for university faculty, students and discipline development, and proposed a new development path of collaboration and self-realization.

Dr. Med. Hans Martin Bosse, gave a lecture entitled "Acquisition of competencies in pediatrics and adolescent medicine", Shared experiences on capacity development in pediatric and adolescent medicine through web-based virtual patient training, best practice models, standardized patient training, and peer role-playing to enhance clinical skills.

The second half of the academic lecture was presided over by Prof. FENG Zhanchun, Executive Director of Institute of Medical Education Research of TJMC, HUST. Prof. KUANG Ming, Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine, Sun Yat-Sen University, made a report on the topic of "Promoting Medical Education through International Cooperation". Taking the medical teaching work of Sun Yat-sen University as an example, he introduced a series of important measures and achievements of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University to promote high-quality medical education through high-quality international cooperation.

Prof. LIU Hong, Director of Department for Teaching Affairs, Peking University Health Science Center, shared the topic of "Philosophy and Practice - Sharing of Undergraduate Medical Education in the New Era at Peking University". She gave a detailed introduction to the integrated curriculum design and practice of Peking University Medical teaching reform in the new era, emphasizing that all departments and colleges should work together to change the original subject-centered curriculum system.

Dr. QING Ping, Director of Department for Medical Teaching Affairs, West China Medical Center of Sichuan University, shared with the topic of "Profound Culture, Strong Disciplines, Key Elements - Tentative Exploration on Top Innovative Talents Training of West China Medical Center of Sichuan University", systematically introduced that West China Medical Center of Sichuan University has given full play to the advantages of medical teaching and research collaboration to promote the enrichment of scientific research resources to teaching. The integrated curriculum promotes students' integrated learning and formative learning, promotes the global innovation of medical disciplines.

Prof. FENG Zhanchun made a concluding speech at the meeting and expressed his sincere respect to the experts who came from afar during their busy busy days. He said that the forum shared their practical experience and successful cases in the field of medical education from different angles and at different levels, providing ideas for the practical exploration and research of medical education reform and innovation.
