Advancing Medical Education to Meet National Health Strategy Needs

In response to the ever-evolving global health challenges, Shi Anbing, Dean of the School of Basic Medicine at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, has emphasized the importance of enhancing medical education to cultivate top innovative talents with multidisciplinary backgrounds, particularly those with a global perspective. Addressing the current situation, he stresses the need to adhere to the forefront of world science and technology, the main economic battlefield, significant national demands, and the health of the people's lives.

Promoting "Three-Dimensional Education" to Foster Professional Ethics

Following the pandemic, the significance of ideological and political education in cultivating top medical talents has become even more pronounced. Dean Shi advocates for a "three-dimensional education" approach that integrates ideological and political education, character development, professional education, and the cultivation of professional spirit. This holistic strategy aims to focus on major medical challenges, such as infectious diseases and chronic illness prevention, and to nurture medical students with patriotism, innovation, pragmatism, and dedication.

Revamping the Curriculum to Enhance Interdisciplinary Learning

Guided by the philosophy of "strong foundation, enhanced integration," the Dean calls for an integrated and interdisciplinary curriculum tailored to medical professional talent's characteristics and knowledge needs. The revamped curriculum will implement a progressive comprehensive practical teaching system based on foundational courses, organ system-integrated clinical knowledge, and capability enhancement. This approach aims to solidify foundational knowledge, strengthen interdisciplinary learning, and achieve a training goal emphasizing life sciences and medicine, integrating multiple disciplines.

Implementing the "Dual Mentor" System to Encourage Innovative Learning

To foster personalized and internationalized education for top medical students, the Dean proposes a "dual mentor" system. This involves the formation of "course teams" and "mentor teams" that work in tandem to support student growth. The "course team" is responsible for delivering high-quality teaching to establish a solid knowledge foundation, while the "mentor team" guides students in research on significant medical science issues. Students are encouraged to choose their research direction based on their interests, integrate into mentor teams early, and engage in research activities to develop their research literacy and innovative capabilities.
