A New Chapter in Sino-German Joint Training—The 13th Sino-German Joint Training Program for Medical Education Faculty Successfully Held

From October 22 to 24, 2024, the 13th Sino-German Joint Training Program for Medical Education Faculty was successfully held by Tongji Medical College and the Center for Faculty Development in Teaching. Three experts from Heidelberg University in Germany, Michael Kirschfink, Veronika Strittmatter-Haubold, and Sebastian Stehle, along with five trainers from our university, LIU Wenqi, SUN Jun, ZHOU Lin, YUAN Ping, and LI Lei, jointly delivered the training, and the session was attended by over 60 teachers from member institutions of the Sino-German Medical Education Alliance, including Peking University, Fudan University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Sun Yat-sen University, Sichuan University, Shandong University, and faculties of our university.



To provide participants with a high-quality learning experience, experts from both China and Germany, and workers of the Center for Faculty Development in Teaching, had prepared the session for half a year. They held online meetings, collectively prepared the lessons offline, communicated about the goals and expectations of the training, and discussed the training plan and contents.

On the morning of October 24, the opening ceremony of this training session was held in the auditorium of Tongji Medical College. Professor ZHANG Yonghui, Vice President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Professor Kirschfink from Heidelberg University delivered speeches, with the ceremony presided over by LI Yan, Vice Dean of Tongji Medical College. After the training, representatives of the trainees shared the insights they gained from the workshop. Professor Kirschfink from the German side and Professor XIANG Ming, Director of the Center for Faculty Development in Teaching, commented about this this training session at the end.



The trainers integrated new research results regarding teaching into classroom instruction during the workshop and adopted a variety of teaching methods, including case studying, group discussions, practical simulations, and game-playing. These new strategies helped teachers better understand and use flipped classroom teaching, peer instruction, PBL teaching, outcome-based education (OBE), and Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives. The trainees stated that they greatly benefited from the training.

This Sino-German Joint Training Program for Medical Education Faculty used new concepts of undergraduate education evaluation and assessment, which are "student-centered, outcome-oriented, and improvement-sustainable". The workshop of this kind helps drive teaching reform and innovation, enhancing teachers' understanding of the cutting-edge trends in university education and and improving teachers' teaching skills.
