On the evening of 24th October, Prof. LIU Chao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering was invited to participate in the “Forensic Medicine: Face to Face” event sponsored by the Department of Forensic Medicine of Tongji Medical College. QIN Xuanbin, the Deputy Secretary of Party Committee of Tongji Medical College, attended the event and delivered a welcome speech. QI Haibo, the Director of Medical Student Office, leaders of the Department of Forensic Medicine, relevant leaders and experts of Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department and Wuhan Municipal Public Security Bureau, and more than 300 teachers and students were involved in the activity.

In the opening session of the special report, Prof. LIU Chao made a speech themed “Forensic Science and Its value”. In the speech, he shared his personal experience of how an average medical student grew into the only “police academician” in China. By offering a multitude of examples from his forensic practice and research experiences, he vividly illustrated how an individual can realize his or her value of life as a professional. He hopes that his success story can encourage more young people to respond to the call of the times and the country, and eventually realize personal worth.

After the lecture, Prof. LIU had a Q&A session with the students and public security forensic doctors attending the event. He answered the questions raised by young students. These questions involved their personal development, challenges encountered in their practice and other concerns of forensic practitioners. He said: “Today’s hard work will lay bedrock for your future success.” He encouraged everyone to work diligently, have a broad horizon, and become a well-rounded medical talent who can shoulder great responsibilities.

Prof. LIU is currently working for the Guangdong Provincial Drug Experiment Technology Centre, a branch of the National Drug Laboratory. He, as a forensic professional, has been fighting in the front line of public security for decades, and is a highly-decorated policeman and a well-known scholar. He was involved in more than 6000 major or difficult cases. Prof. LIU, as the lead or corresponding author, published 173 papers and authored three monographs.

The “Face to Face” is a specialty event sponsored by the Department of Forensic Medicine of Tongji Medical University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. It invited some eminent figures in forensic medicine, including LIU Chao, QIN Ming, LI Changyu, to share their experiences in forensic education, research and case investigations. The activities aim to broaden the vision of forensic students and teachers and set role models for them. This activity was also the first event of the 2024 Medical Professional Culture Festival.
