Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and the local government in Qiaokou District successfully held the "Medical Innovation and Transformation Competition" finals together on May 21. The event showcased 12 cutting-edge medical projects and was designed to foster new university-industry collaborations.

The competition brought together nearly 130 contestants from academia, governmental sections, and industry, including Tongji Medical College, enterprises, venture capital firms, and healthcare companies. At the heart of the initiative was a shared commitment to bridging the gap between bench research and clinical application through innovative partnerships.

Prof. WU Tangchun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Dean of Tongji Medical College, highlighted the critical role of medical institutions in driving technological transformation. "The translation of bench research into solutions of practical issues represents the vital connection between scientific discovery and patient care." he noted, emphasizing the competition's potential to push forward diagnostic, therapeutic, and pharmaceutical innovations.

Representatives from local authorities underscored the symbiotic relationship between the Tongji Medical College and the Wuhan City in the growth of Wuhan. Mr. JIANG Tiebing from Municipal Talent Administration Bureau praised Tongji's legacy in medical education, while Mr. ZHOU Geng from Qiaokou District described the institution as a "gold-standard partner" in regional innovation.

The final round showcased projects in a wide array of fields ranging from medical equipment, precision medicine, early screening technologies, and digital health platforms. Prof. XIAO Xianjin's "At-Home Male Fertility Quantification System" claimed the top honor, receiving a 100,000 yuan award.

A significant result of the event was the signing of 12 research collaboration agreements between academic teams and healthcare enterprises, paving the way for joint development and further commercialization endeavor.

Looking forward, Tongji Medical College plans to strengthen its transformation of research results and deepen strategic ties with Qiaokou District. This initiative is in alignment with state health priorities and is establishing new models for academic-industrial cooperation – by which innovations from universities, through such bilateral partnerships, translate into practical applications and eventually serve the purpose of promoting the health of people.
