Opened on July 1, 1981, Liyuan Hospital affiliated with Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology is the only geriatric hospital licensed in Hubei Province. In 1997, it was merged into the former Tongji Medical University and became the Third Affiliated Hospital and the Third Clinical College of Tongji Medical University.

Located in the East Lake scenic area with elegant environment and convenient transportation, the hospital now has 1,200 opened beds (800 authorized beds) in the main hospital area and Yangchunhu hospital district, and employs more than 800 people, 300 of whom haveintermediateand senior professional titles.

The hospital has complete disciplines and comprehensive treatment methods with advanced equipment, including 3.0T magnetic resonance, 128-layer spiral CT, intelligent rehabilitation robot, tumor radiation linear accelerator and other high-tech inspection and treatment equipment.

The hospital has gradually formed a medical pattern with the characteristics and advantages of prevention and treatment of geriatric diseases, and has accumulated rich experience in the treatment and rehabilitation of geriatric diseases. The diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot and the repair of chronic wound are at the leading level in China, and the Hubei Clinical Research Center for Chronic Trauma and Diabetic Foot Medicine was established based on our hospital. Geriatrics and psychiatry are the key specialties in Hubei Province, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of geriatric cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, endocrine and other complications, as well as adolescent psychiatric disorders and depression in the elderly. In September 2020, the Cardiovascular Clinical Medical Center was established, aiming to build a "domestic first-class and internationally advanced" cardiovascular and cerebrovascular specialty.

The hospital has a Hubei Institute of Geriatric Medicine, which has undertaken more than a hundred scientific research projects at the national and provincial levels, and has obtained many key clinical projects directly under the Ministry of Health. The hospital currently has eight specialty residency training bases, as well as training bases for geriatric nurses and psychiatric nurses.
