"2019 International Complement and Diseases Forum" successfully held at Tongji Medical College

          On May 13, 2019, the 2019 International Complement and Diseases Forum (Wuhan) was held at Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The Hubei Provincial Association of Immunologists, Department of Immunology at Tongji Medical College, Department of Nephrology at affiliated Union Hospital of Tongji Medical College, and Department of Allergy affiliated with Tongji Hospital of Tongji Medical College organized the forum. Distinguished scholars from China and six European countries gathered to discuss frontier research and developments in the fields of complement and diseases.


Professor Jianguo Chen, who is the Dean of Tongji Medical College and Vice Chancellor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, warmly welcomed the attendees and hoped that the attendees would use the conference as an opportunity to learn from each other and explore the possibility of further cooperation. Dr. Michael Kirschfink, Professor of Immunology at the University of Heidelberg, Germany and Honorary Professor of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, expressed his gratitude to the organizers. Professor Peter Garred, current President of the International Association of Complements from University of Copenhagen, Professor Mohamed R. Daha of Leiden University Medical Centre, Professor Francesco Tedesco of University of Trieste, Professor Reinhard Wurzner of Innsbruck Medical University, Professor Xiaolian Zhang of Wuhan University, Dr. Yang Lin from Tongji Hospital, and Dr. Shanshan Luo from Union Hospital were among the speakers.  Professor Xiang-Ping Yang opened the forum and presided over the morning session.


The complement system plays an important role in infection, immunodeficiency, autoimmune diseases, and tumor development. In the conference, various topics have been discussed including activation mechanisms of complement, complement and pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy, function of Ficolin-2 in infection, complement in tumor immunity and complement-mediated hereditary angioedema. At the conclusion of the conference, Dr. Reinhard Wurzner expressed his gratitude to the organizers and closed the forum. (Contributed by Han Aihua Xia Minghui)
