On the evening of May 9th, the first session of Award Ceremony for School of Basic Medicine International Students was successfully held in the conference room on the 4th floor of the Teaching Building No.2. The ceremony was chaired by Ms. Chen Xi, supervisor for international students in School of Basic Medicine, and Ms. Wang Fang, vice dean at School of Basic Medicine, Ms. Hong Tao, International Student Office director, Ms. Yan Hanjiao, Teaching Affairs Office director as well as Ms. Liu Hui, Pharmacology Department teaching director, attended this activity.
Ms. Wang Fang began by extending her congratulations to those awarded students. In her speech, she emphasized the infinite power of examples by quoting the famous remark from Chairman Mao Zedong “A single spark can start a prairie fire (星星之火，可以燎原)” and expressed her hopes for awarded students to motivate other international students for greater achievements. All together 45 students from nearly 40 countries were granted the awards in four categories based on their respective achievements in academics, class management, volunteerism, recreation and sports. All these awards were given by Leaders present in this ceremony.
During the Outstanding Representative Experience Sharing Part, MOHAMMAD OSAMA, a MBBS 2017 student from Pakistan, unveiled his secret to maintaining top 1 weighted average score among MBBS: keep a positive and consistent attitude toward study. He stressed the importance of thought and attitude by citing Iron Lady Mrs. Thatcher’s famous remarks “Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become your character. And watch your character, for it becomes your destiny. What we think, we become”.
ELHAM ESMAEILI, a student from Iran, as the outstanding student leadership representative, admitted that class management did bring some challenges to her academic work, however this process also strengthened her confidence in overcoming future difficulties.
LIYANARACHCHIGE DONA SACHINI PAMODI DISSANAYAKE, whose impressive talents performance has covered almost every significant activity in HUST, is a student from Sri Lanka in MBBS 2016; as the outstanding campus activity participant, she shared the story how she managed to enrich her campus life with so many activities.
WILHEM MAURICIO DA SILVA TEIXEIRA, a student from Cape Verde, described his understanding and love for volunteerism in a humorous way based on his experience as a volunteer in Tongji Medical College Sports Meeting in the spring semester of 2019.
International student volunteers from School of Basic Medicine have added special color to the past Tongji Medical College Sports Meeting with their sweet smiles and hard work. Their service also enabled the athletes to focus on the games and achieve excellent results.
School of Basic Medicine has all along attached great importance to the cultivation of international students. The number of international students at School of Basic Medicine reached 248 in the autumn semester of 2018. As the witnesses for exchanges between China and the world, International students serve as crucial bridges connecting China with their home countries. This award ceremony held by School of Basic Medicine aims to recognize student leaders and outstanding international students in the areas of academics, recreation and sports, and volunteerism. It also provides a platform where teachers and students can communicate with each other. The Award Ceremony for International Students held by School of Basic Medicine inspires more students to focus on study and participate in the campus activity.
