Teaching and Research Section of Forensic Biology

 The Teaching and Research Section of Forensic Biology is a section engaged in the teaching and scientific research of forensic biology and forensic genetics. There are two professors, one associate professor, one lecturer, one senior engineer and one technician in charge, which are responsible for six projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. A large number of cutting-edge studies have been carried out in forensic genetic markers, forensic genomics, forensic epigenetics, and neurodevelopmental genetic variation and so on, and more than 20 papers on high-level SCI have been published. The Section of Forensic Biology has the first DNA laboratory approved by China National Accreditation Committee for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) in Central South China and has the qualification and ability of judicial identification of DNA paternity test and personal identification. The five judicial experts have rich professional knowledge and practical experience. The laboratory has Illumina FGX^TM Forensic Genomics System, ABI 3500 Genetic Analyzer, 3130 Genetic Analyzer, Roche fluorescence quantitative PCR instrument, ABI gene amplification instruments, and other forensic genetic detection and analysis equipment. The services of forensic identification use the professional certified forensic identification reagents according to the standardized experimental procedures for forensic testing, and the level of forensic identification ability is at the forefront in China. 

           The department of Forensic Clinical Medicine is mainly engaged in teaching, research and medicolegal expertise. There are currently one professor, three associate professors, one lecturer, one senior technician and eight assistants. The department has already won two projects of the National Nature Science Fund of China, two projects of the Ministry of Education, five projects of Natural Science Funds of Hubei Province and more than ten projects of Research Fund of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. About 15 masters of Forensic Medicine have been trained and graduated from here. We have mastered and participated in the compilation of several national textbook such as "Introduction to Forensic Medicine", "Forensic Clinical Medicine", "Forensic Clinical Laboratory Guide", "Forensic Clinical Identification Guide", and so on. The department is well equipped with advanced testing devices. We have established several leading laboratories for the assessment of forensic electrophysiology, auditory function, and three-dimensional scan of body surface scar. Every year, about 1500 cases involving living injuries, medical tangle, work-related disability identification have been completed. We especially focus on the difficult cases with the backup of numerous of experts and advanced facilities from Tongji hospital and Union hospital, gaining highly praised nationwide.

            The department of Forensic Clinical Medicine & Psychiatry includes two areas of expertise: Forensic clinical medicine and Forensic psychiatry. There are currently one professor, three associate professors, one lecturer, one senior technician and eight assistants. The department undertakes two projects of the National Nature Science Fund of China, two projects of the Ministry of Education, five projects of Natural Science Funds of Hubei Province and more than 10 projects of Research Fund of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. More than 20 masters of Forensic Medicine have been trained and graduated from here. We especially focus on the difficult cases with the backup of numerous of experts and advanced facilities from Tongji hospital and Union hospital, gaining highly praised nationwide.

       As early as 1850’s, the department of Forensic Pathology has carried out autopsies. After the establishment of the Judicial Expertise Center in 2001, this department has been running and mainly focused on judicial expertise on aspects of death or injury such as cause, manner, time and so on. Our team of forensic experts wins a high reputation nationwide. Currently there are three professors, one associate professors and one lecturer. All experts in the team have gained doctorates and more than 70% of them have studied abroad. Besides every expert also holds positions in national, provincial or municipal societies. This department is the deputy director unit of Professional Committee of Forensic Pathology of Chinese Forensic Medicine Association, and the vice-chairman unit of Hubei Association of Forensic Medicine, Hubei Judicial Expertise Association, Wuhan Association of Forensic Medicine and Wuhan Judicial Expertise Association. Every year, our team carries out lots of judicial expertise, among the highest in the country, and undertakes quite a number of socially influential cases.

       The Section of Forensic Toxicology Analysis is mainly engaged in teaching, research and social services related to forensic toxicological analysis. There are 4 staff (1 associate professor, 1 lecturer, 1 senior technician and 1 post-doctor) and 5 postgraduate students in this Section. For undergraduates of forensic medicine, we offer mandatory and academic course of Forensic Toxicology Analysis and Introduction of Forensic Medicine. Besides, we offer optional courses such as Poison, and Analysis of Complex Sample for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. In addition, we teach courses for Adult Education. Up to date, we have received finance support from National Natural Science Fund, Hubei Provincial Natural Science Fund, Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities in China and also from HUST. Our research interest focuses on the development of new analytical methods for rapid and selective isolation of bioactive compounds (poisons, drugs, drugs of abuse) from biological samples based on instrumental analysis, artificial liquid membranes as well as functional materials, and in the recent 5 years, we have published over 20 SCI papers. Currently, we are cooperating with top-institutes and top-universities worldwide (such as Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Czech, Canada......), and our ultimate goal is to establish rapid methods for the analysis of bioactive compounds in single cells and in living organisms in the future.
