Tongji Medical College of HUST was founded by a German Military Doctor Erich Paulun in Shanghai in 1907 as German Medical Schoolfor Chinese. Dr.Erich Paulun established this school and affiliated hospital with the purpose to improve the medicare conditions of the German citizens living in Shanghai. The name "Tongji" derived from the local dialect's pronunciation of "Deutschland" for Germany. Later, this medical school was constantly renamed, and became the Medical School of National Tongji University In 1927.

During the Anti-Japanese War, Tongji Medical College had to migrate to inland to avoid wars and relocated subsequently in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan and later settled down in Yibing, Sichuan Province. After marching on nearly half China for 8 years, it eventually moved back to Shanghai in April, 1946.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in 1951 the medical school was moved from Shanghai to Wuhan, where it merged with the medical college of Wuhan University to form Central-South Tongji Medical College. Tongji Hospital, founded in Shanghai by Dr. Paulun, and Wuhan Union Hospital(formerly Hankow Mission and Hankou Union Hospital) founded in 1866 by Griffith John, a British, were attached to College as its teaching hospitals.
